New in: Best Pressed's Zine About Zines

Our friend Stef Bradley, who's zine 'Today' is already in the collection at the library, has recently set up her own zine distro called 'Best Pressed'. As well as selling zines at gigs and other exciting events, Stef recently led a zine making workshop in Liverpool. To help participants, she created a 'Zine About Zines', containing helpful instructions on how to make a zine yourself.

The zine features a useful illustrated 'What is a zine' and 'How to make a zine' sections, a comic about making zines and an interview with Young Explorer (us, when we're not doing zine library things!). We have a few of these at the library in a range of snazzy colours.

New in: Popular Stand Issue 65

Popular Stand: a football fanzine for the likes of Doncaster, was launched in 1998 as a "collective mouthpiece against those seemingly intent on driving the club out of existence". This pre-season issue features previews for the 2013-2014 season, opinion pieces, stats and humorous articles. And Jedward on the front cover.

New in: Animated Review Issue #01

"This is the inaugural issue of the Animated Review ‘zine. Created to compliment our blog of inspirational animation, the publication highlights some of the great creative talents we have had the pleasure of featuring online.

We asked a selection of artists to reinterpret, in the own style, their favourite childhood cartoon character. The enthusiastic response we received helped highlight the importance of these shows, and the fondness with which they are remembered. Maybe some of the illustrations contained within these pages will rekindle some nostalgic memories of your own..."

Issue #01 features:

New in: David Shit: Poems 2012 - 2013

A selection of poems from 2012 - 2013 about desire and its place within the constant flow of life and death, not only as experienced by us day to day but also seen with the forensic eye of a scientist or the long view of a historian.

David is an unpublished writer from Sydney and mainly writes poetry and short articles. He is interested in the physical world, and how the story of science tells us this, forms and influences our emotional worlds.

New in: Red All Over The Land - A Liverpool Fanzine: Issue 188

A couple of weeks ago we Tweeted asking specifically for more football fanzine submissions, which the excellent football website Stand Against Modern Football helped us with. Here's what we said!
We were really pleased, then, when 'Red All Over The Land' dropped on our doormat. Keep your football, rugby league (and any other subject for that matter) zines coming!

Red All Over The Land is a Liverpool FC fanzine that's been going for over fifteen years, if my research is correct. The 188th issue - a pre-season special - includes articles previewing the forthcoming season, pre-season friendly match reports and opinion pieces.

Subscriptions for the fanzine are available online and copies are available to buy from around Anfield and away matches before kick off.

New in: White Pigeon Issue One - In The Forest

"White pigeon is a black and white photography zine which documents the travels and experiences of a budding artist and photographer. The overall idea is to give the viewer a glimpse into the artist's love for exploring and the outdoors, and hopefully inspire them to get out and see the world and be creative on the way.

Each issue has a different theme/setting and every publication is made solely by the artist; all the photography and art is his own. Ever imperfection adds character, reflecting the title: if it was perfect, 'Dove' would have been more fitting!"

New in: Kids With Puns

Kids With Puns is a celebration of the humble pun. It's a student run magazine whose main purpose is to change the pun's reputation from being cheap to one of subtlety and complexity.

Underground Press Research Help

Can you help Joe with his research? Get in touch with him if you can! Sadly we don't have any of these in the collection at the moment (although we would gratefully receive donations, as ever!)

Request for Help with Research

I’m a research student at the University of Salford looking for help with a project on the Greater Manchester underground press in the sixties and seventies. If anybody has any issues of Grass Eye, Mole Express, Free Press, or RAP (the Rochdale Alternative Paper) – or another paper you think I may have missed – I would love to hear from you. If you were involved with the underground press yourself, or knew anyone that was, please get in touch also. The underground press has been largely neglected by historians and what little work there is tends to concentrate on papers based in London. I’m hoping to redress the balance with a study of the scene in Manchester, Salford, and nearby areas.

Please drop me an email at j.a.darlington@edu.salford.ac.uk if you think you could help me out. Any assistance is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Joe Darlington
